I have spent the last 9 months (on and off) in Nebraska.
I thought that Nebraska was completely flat until I got to Scottsbluff, NE and saw that this was not completely true. Scottsbluff National Monument contains towering formations of eroded siltstone, and was a landmark on the Oregon Trail.
North Platt River runs through this part of Nebraska.
And, that just about sums it up for the adventures in Nebraska.
Soon, the sun and wind became cold, snow and freezing wind. The camper held up okay.
Lots of hours spent indoors to avoid the wind.
Eventually, and a little too late, the vinyl skirting I had ordered to keep the cold out from the underside of the camper arrived. It works absolutely beautifully. However, I should have ordered this custom RV skirting 4-6 months in advance. Which, of course, I did not do.
Omaha, NE boasts of the best zoo in the country.
Wetlands near Shelby, Iowa.
Jade and Lexi swimming in the Missouri River near Omaha, NE. They learned how to swim early in our life on the road, in summer of 2021.
Overall I would say Nebraska and Iowa have been the least favorable states I have visited as far as weather and things to do. But! This is not a Nebraska hate post.
I made the most of my time there. I have concluded that, no matter where you are in nature, every place is at least a little bit awesome. Scottsbluff, NE was awesome. The bluffs look like an old western movie with blue skies and tumble weeds. And lots of stars. I spent my time working, going to the local dog park which had a great view of the bluffs, and I joined a local yoga class. Omaha, NE is the perfect size city with tourist destinations like the zoo, and lots of restaurants. I stayed in Shelby, Iowa, which was basically a trailer park in a town so small there was no traffic light, and no grocery store. But I was nearby a walking / biking trail that had a wetlands area, a small park, and lots of native birds.
While in Omaha, I joined a climbing gym and so even though there wasn't a lot of hiking areas (or weather that was good to hike in), I was still having fun.
