Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park

In July 2022 we spent one day each in Teton and in Yellowstone. If you are going to Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park is definitely worth visiting as well.

In person the mountains look unreal.

Grand Teton has a very clear, clean, cool lake, ideal for kayaking and paddle boarding, but also refreshing to dip into on a hot July day. Which I did, clothes and all. Wyoming is hot and dry in July, so I was dry pretty quickly.

I was amazed how many bison we saw, here at Teton and in Wyoming and SD in general. Even baby bison! This once endangered species is now considered "near threatened". (Source U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service https://www.fws.gov/species/plains-bison-bison-bison-bison )

Yellowstone National Park

I bet you can guess this iconic geothermal feature's name! It is very famous for it's two main qualities: being old & being faithful!

The last time I visited Yellowstone was with Amanda in May of 2019 and I remember there being much more snow compared to this visit in july.

My attempt at giving visual context to how much snow was in (southeastern) Yellowstone during my visit in 2019. My Georgia self thought it was a lot of snow.

Yellowstone temperatures are counterintuitive: it gets warmer as you go further north. This is because the geothermal heat from the volcano keeps the northern area warm all the time.

Back to pics from 2022.

The wildlife at Yellowstone is highly photogenic, especially these bacteria that form cool patterns of bacterial mats in these hot springs.

The hot springs at Yellowstone are too hot for soaking in. You can typically see the water boiling.
